Peter Paul Rubens, Henri IV at the Battle of Ivry

The famous battle fought by the French King Henri IV on 12 March 1590 near Ivry, west of Paris. This uncompleted composition provides us with a rare insight into Rubens's creative process. In this painting, it is clear to see how he built up his paintings using pen-and-brush drawings.
