𝓲

The first curator of the Museum Plantin-Moretus, a renowned expert on Rubens as well as a literary critic and journalist. Max Rooses (1839-1914) was an expert in a wide range of disciplines. On account of his many different roles - including in the political arena - his collection is spread across several museums. The collection in the Rubenshuis was donated by the Museum Plantin-Moretus, on account of the content.

Voluminous working files

Rooses' sub-collection is a unique compilation of working files that he produced following his research and accompanying publications on Rubens. The collection also includes files on art history exhibitions, for which he was secretary. Examples include 'Jacob Jordaens' at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (1905) and 'L'Art Belge au XVIIe siècle' at the Cinquantenaire Park in Brussels (1910).
