Marguerite Casteels collection
… on Flemish sculpture from the Renaissance and Baroque period
Marguerite Casteels (1915-1988) specialised as an art historian in sculpture from Antwerp during the period 1580-1640. She donated the superb photo collection she built up during her career to the Rubenshuis.
Feminine finesse
The Brussels-born scholar had a particular interest in Flemish sculpture from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. As a scientific collaborator and librarian at Gaasbeek Castle, she delved deep into the discipline. As such, she could hold her own in the male-dominated academic world. The documentation is a collection of texts accompanied by photo albums (with over 2,000 photos!), and is mainly categorised by artist. You will also find transcriptions of archival documents from the 16th century and later.
