Rubens had the habit of reworking paintings which his assistants painted after his own specifications. A lesser-known fact is that he also took great pleasure in retouching the paintings and drawings of other, usually older masters.
Your guide will provide an introduction to classical mythology in the courtyard of the Rubens House. Rubens purchased this house when he moved back to Antwerp after having spent eight years in Italy. He was inspired by antique architecture and the classical mythology which he learnt about in Italy for the renovation of the house.
Rubens will be your host this year for the cultural city festival ‘Antwerp Baroque 2018: Rubens Inspires’. You can look forward to a bold and overflowing programme of Baroque, old and new. The Rubens House is the starting point for the celebrations.
