De opwekking van Lazarus

Arnout Vinckenborch

Vinckenborch came to Antwerp from Alkmaar in North Holland. Like many young artists, he was attracted by the magnetic success of Rubens’s studio, in which he may well have worked as an assistant.

His style is strongly indebted to Rubens. Vinckenborch probably relied heavily on the studio’s large stock of head studies, or ‘tronies’, which he recycled in his own compositions. His untimely death at the age of just 30 explains his relatively small oeuvre and the limited number of extant works.
