Anthony van Dyck

Anthony van Dyck

The best-known and without a doubt the most talented assistant of Rubens was Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). He was an extraordinarily talented artist and Rubens was quick to notice his promise.

A competitor

He became Rubens's first serious competitor in Antwerp. Over time, when working in Italy and Great Britain, Van Dyck revealed himself to be a virtuoso portrait artist. His empathy and magnificent technique were flawless.

Who is the artist?

Until recently, this portrait of the young Van Dyck was frequently attributed to Rubens. A recent technical investigation, however, revealed that this is a self-portrait by Van Dyck.
