Rubens, Holbein and the Dance of Death: on the acquisition of a sketchbook

08.04.00 - 12.06.00

This exhibition was organised to mark the acquisition of a sketchbook of the young Rubens. He was inspired by a series of prints by the artist Hans Holbein II (1497/98-1543).

The City of Antwerp purchased this sketchbook in 2000. It features a number of spectacular drawings by the young Rubens. It contains 42 pen drawings. The main theme is the Dance of Death, after the series of satirical prints created by Hans Holbein II.

The exhibition outlined the context in which the young Rubens drew these amazing artworks. Are you curious to see these early drawings by the young Rubens? They are conserved in the city's Print Room.
