Alexander Adriaenssen

Although Adriaenssen painted a wide range of still-lifes, he really made a name for himself as a painter of fish.

He also painted several still-lifes in which fish is combined with other motifs. This composition is a fine example of this.

The fruit, the fish, the crab, the poultry and vegetables all look as if they have just been bought from the market, and were brought to this kitchen, where they have been casually arranged on the table.

The canvas is signed on the right-hand edge of the table and dated "1640".
